When the call went out for GeekMom readers to help us respond to Vogue’s proclamation that Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer is “an unusually stylish geek,” we got some awesome responses. And we think they prove our point that geeks have style in spades. Check out the highlights from the submissions below.
Katie Terry is a med student who co-authors a fashion blog, phenotype: Fabulous
, with her best friend.
Katie’s blog shows off a great mix of work and weekend looks for her geeky lifestyle.
Kitty Heaven is mom to a two-year-old, and she made this dress herself. She had the manga print she designed printed up by Spoonflower
, who we adore. She made the kanzashi in her hair from manga pages.
Emily Lakdawalla, blogger for The Planetary Society
, wore this awesome Mars Rover skirt from Etsy shop Go Follow Rabbits
at last year’s annual meeting of the Division for Planetary Sciences of the American Astronomical Society.
Natalie Shaw made these Doctor Who shoes, which we are seriously coveting, and even wrote up a tutorial for them at her blog Doodlecraft.
Teresa Gadda is a roboticist and mother of two. She also added Arduino-controlled LED lights to this dress so it would twinkle when she wore it to the opening of the San Francisco Exploratorium. Oh, and she hand knit the shawl.
Author Barb Ferrer bid on and won this Proenza Schouler gown (originally worn by Maggie Gyllenhaal at the 2007 Oscars
) at a Clothes Off Our Backs auction. She wore it the night her debut novel won a RITA award.
This is Barb Ferrer’s 16-year-old daughter, Abby, who is a proud geek and aspiring Manga artist. We get our sense of style young in the geek world.
Here’s GeekMom and meteorologist Patricia Vollmer all decked out…
…and here’s Patricia two days later doing some fabulous cosplay. Geek fashion is nothing if not versatile.
GeekMom Ruth Suehle even broke out the white gloves and pearls to rock this gown.
And here’s Ruth in one of the most adorable family photos ever. Take that, Vogue!
GeekMom Karen Burnham rocking a gown that shows off her tats.
Natania Barron is our resident makeup fanatic at GeekMom. She documents her endless collection of lip colors with her Lipstick Diaries Facebook photos.
GeekMom Jackie Reeve loves coats and knit that scarf herself. In 2011 she decided to photograph herself every day to keep track of her outfits, and when she found out she was pregnant it turned into quite the bump diary
Sarah Pinault, a British expat and GeekMom, has that quirky Brit style that must just be in the genes. You should see the dress-up photos when she and her kids start playing.
