I’m sure I’m not the only mom whose kids enjoy these things.
So of course I leapt at the chance to review Nerf’s newest products: the Zombie Strike line, which includes dart blasters, foam machetes, and other accessories. First available at SDCC this past July, we received a pair of blasters and darts in early August and the boys immediately “claimed” their arms of choice. For 2013, these items are a Target exclusive (although they’re being resold at smaller retail outlets). They will be more widely available in 2014.
My older son chose the Zombie Strike Sledgefire, which has a “triple dart shell system” with storage in the stock. The Sledgefire comes with three ready-to-load shells and nine Zombie Strike neon green-colored darts.
My younger one was happy with the Zombie Strike Hammershot. The Hammershot features a five-dart rotating barrel and a pull-back hammer. It comes with five Zombie Strike neon green darts.
In addition, we received a package of thirty refill darts.
The two Nerf blasters are similar in construction and usability as other Nerf-brand blasters. My sons have been really enjoying them this past month. But one thing stood out for us: The Hammershot fires its darts far. In no time my youngest son’s first five darts sailed out of the backyard, having traveled nearly fifty feet! Since we’ve only been in our new house a short time, it was a nice way for my sons to meet their new neighbors.
“Hello Mr. Smith, my name is Johnny and I have several Nerf darts in your backyard. May I claim them?”
Similarly, there was some drama when my youngest son fired the Hammershot too close to my oldest son. If the blaster can send a dart fifty feet, imagine what it must feel like at three feet. They learned their lessons quickly.
When those first darts disappeared, it was time to break open the refill darts.
These new Nerf products will make great gifts for kids ages 8 and up. The Sledgefire retails for $27.99, the Hammershot for $15.99, and the refill dart package for $9.99. Buy them now at Target, either online or in the store. If you’d rather use Amazon, smaller resellers have them available at a markup.
