Happy Comic Release Day! Welcome to another installment of GeekMom Comic Book Corner, where we recap our adventures in comics for the week.

Kelly Knox – My Little Pony Micro-Series #2 (IDW)
This week while I hunted in vain for the variant cover of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe #1, my daughter grabbed a comic from the kids’ rack: the Rainbow Dash one-shot from IDW. It turned out to be a great pick and one we both enjoyed.

My Little Pony Micro-Series #2 follows the headstrong Rainbow Dash in her own adventure that plays out just like an episode of the show. Rainbow Dash encounters gremlins in the clouds, and it’s up to her to face her fears and chase away the darkness that hangs over Ponyville. The pages are packed with high-flying action through the clouds, bad guys that mean business, and Sonic Rainbooms.

Although it’s a little strange to see Rainbow Dash on her own (without the help of her friends) for most of the story, it is great to see each pony featured in their own issue. Rainbow Dash’s solo outing is a fun read for anyone who calls her their favorite pony.

Dakster Sullivan — Secret Six: Unhinged
Secret Six: Unhinged is written by Gail Simone and drawn by Nicola Scott. I wasn’t to sure about this one, because it seems little off from what normally read. After flipping through the pages, I noticed Batman in one of the panels and decided to give it a shot. This isn’t the first time a title has grabbed my attention because of the Batman either. The last time was with Justice League International and I wasn’t disappointed in that one either.

The team was interesting and included Cat Man, Deadshot, Scandal (Vandel Savage’s daughter), Bane, and someone by the name of Rag Doll. While Cat Man’s name sounds ridiculous, his character was hardcore and kept me wanting more of him. I know Deadshot from one episode of Justice League: Unlimited and he didn’t change much from the show to the comic books. He was probably one of my favorite members of the team. The book opens with Deadshot and Cat Man having a heart to heart on their way to get ice cream for their boss, Scandal. With the series of events in the convenience store, I realized these guys were not the Superman / Batman hero type.

The first volume follows the team on a mission to get a girl who is in possession of a “get out of hell free” card. Even though most of the team plays off that the card can’t possibly be real, it doesn’t keep some of them from going at each other’s throats to get it.

There are two villains in this book. The first villain is pretty scary and gets scarier at their big reveal. The second is more of a nuisance and I’m not sure why they are really there.

Gail did an awesome job on the writing as usual and Nicola did a phenomenal job making me have nightmares over one of the villains. Her art was a pleasure to see…until it started scaring me.

You can pick up the entire series on Comixology or the graphic novel on Amazon. I plan on picking up the rest of the volumes this week!
