Taking Mentos and Coke Zero up a Notch

Electronics GeekMom

Fritz Grobe and Stephen Voltz of Maine have done it again. After captivating the internet five years ago with colorful displays created from Diet Coke and Mentos, they have since kicked it up a notch. Using 54 bottles of Coke Zero and 324 pieces of Mentos they have created a single-passenger rocket car. After a previous attempt took them 220 feet last year, this year’s Mark II has taken them 239 feet and only used half the “fuel.” News sites as varied as The Washington Post and FoxNews are posting an Associated Press article, in which the pair from Eepybird.com claim a record has been set for a soda-propelled vehicle. It doesn’t appear that an official record has yet been validated, but I wonder if there would be any other entrants in this category?

The pair are obviously excited by this latest achievement but encourage people to NOT try this at home as it is extremely dangerous.

  1. Years ago, my daughter did the Mentos and Diet Coke experiment for a school science fair, carefully documenting the reactions and theorizing why it was happening, then doing research to back up her theories, then speculating how the energy released could be harnessed. I HAVE to show her this!!

    *dies laughing*

    That was AWESOME!!
