My Little Geek

Raising a nerdling is an exhausting but ultimately rewarding job.

Oh, yes – rewarding already! When my 2-year old daughter can identify the difference between a clone ranger and a stormtrooper – well, it just brings a little tear to my eye. And hey, now seems like a PERFECT time to RE-TELL the story of how Vivienne pointed at a picture of Princess Leia (from Empire) in her Star Wars Heroes board book and said with absolute certainty,”Mommy.”

(Let me know if you want to hear that story again. I never get tired of telling it. Oh, and if you have a time machine, please go back and tell that story to 11 year old me, will you?)

But as anyone who reads GeekMom frequently knows – there is a whole universe of smart, fun and exciting things to teach her and experience with her as she gets older – so many cool science experiments and amazing books to read. Movies to introduce her to and comic books…

But right now, she’s two.  And thanks to the book My Little Geek by Andrew and Sarah Spear, I can prep her for all of the amazing adventures we have ahead of us.

I’m not ashamed to say that I squealed with delight when I flipped through my review copy of this book. But come on – these illustrations by Edit Sliacka are pretty fabulous.

The ones that make me laugh EVERY TIME are, “L is for L337” and “R is for Rube Goldberg Machine.” The quote on the back of the book sums it up perfectly: “Imagine the joy of hearing your young one chatting away about his holographic ninja or time traveling joy stick.”

And there are Easter Eggs in there too – note in the picture above the “I <3 Veronica” sticker and OH HEY A NERDIST symbol! According to Sarah, there are 12 of these references to tech celebrity/tech culture hidden in the illustrations. Side quest! Love it!

There’s also a companion My Little Geek Matching app for those of us who like to play interactive games with our toddlers.  Plus, Andrew paired up with my friend, the very talented musician Mike Phirman (of Hard & Phirm fame) to create a free online game called Chicken Monkey Duck.

This is a GREAT gift for the folks in your life with a newly minted geek arrival. In fact, this is the kind of book that I would buy 5 copies of and keep on hand to wrap and give out for little birthday presents or holiday stocking stuffers.
