There are many things I worry about, when it comes to the safety of my children. When they were little I worried that they’d run out in front of a car in the grocery store parking lot. I religiously buckled them into car seats and boosters, way past the ages that their friends were restrained. And as they got to be older I worried about issues that had not even crossed my mind when they were preschoolers.
A wide variety of headphones have been a standard in our house for over 15 years now. We’ve bought the cheap ones (to store in the car as extras, to divert disaster when someone realized they’d left theirs at home). We’ve bought the expensive ones (I should’ve bought stock in Skull Candy years ago). But no matter what the size, shape, or color, I’ve always worried. I’ve noticed way too many magazine articles about how young people today are suffering hearing loss at alarming rates, mostly due to music being played too loud in headphones.
Our family rule is that if people around you can hear your music, it’s too loud. But there are many times I’m not around them when they’re plugged in, or they’re in the back of the car, where the cabin noise blocks out any hint that someone’s pushing the volume limits.
I could not have been more thrilled to hear about the new dBLogic Ear Buds, that have SPL2 technology. In a nutshell, these ear buds offer superior listening quality, while protecting the listener from hearing loss.
Sound Pressure Level Limiting Technology (SPL2) reduces the users’ exposure to sound wave pressures by limiting them to 85 decibels (dB). This keeps the music under the limits specified by OSHA for safe sound levels. But, magically these ear buds keep levels safe while offering exceptional sound quality.
My teens noticed no restriction in their listening options, and were very pleased with the quality of these new ear buds. It doesn’t hurt that they come in really cool, metallic colors. I found that I no longer cringed every time one of my teens walked in the door, tell tale wires running down their chests, into their coat pockets. I knew, for certain, that they were not playing their music “too loud,” and chipping away at their future hearing capacity. It’s one of those few win-win products.
There is one glitch to this product. Because we’ve bought so many packages of ear buds in the past decade and a half, no one, including me, actually reads directions anymore. You tear open the package and stick them in your ears, right?
Well, with dBLogic ear buds, there’s a bit more to know. To accommodate the technology, the wires coming out of the buds are a teeny bit heavier than cheaper head phones. The most comfortable way to wear them is with the wire coming out of the top, up over the ear. This also ensures the bud fits in the ear canal at the right angle, creating a tight seal to prevent acoustic leakage. My kids found this adjustment made them more comfortable and stable, as they wore them riding bikes and being active. I’m sure they will be seeing some time on the ski slopes soon.
We received several of these ear buds for review purposes but I most likely will be buying several more pairs, for nieces and nephews. They’ll make a perfect holiday gift, combining safety that will make their parents happy, and sound quality that will keep those kids I love happy too.
