Feeling at Home as a Geek

During most of my normal life, I don’t really get the chance to geek out very much. My life usually revolves around my toddler, husband, school, work, housework and other rather mundane things.

But recently I was able to. I attended ConCarolinas and I got the overwhelming feeling of belonging. It is great to be in a hotel with hundreds of other fellow geeks.

Also, in the course of normal life, most moms don’t get to dress up in costumes. I love costumes, and it’s one of the best things, in my opinion, about going to cons. I wore my Kaylee Layer Cake costume from Firefly and nearly everyone knew who I was supposed to be. I also got a lot of compliments on it which made me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

The highlight of the con, for me, was the Buffy / Dr. Horrible sing-along. We watch the Buffy episode, Once More With Feeling, followed by Dr. Horrible. And yes, nearly everyone sang along with both shows. It was great to be in a packed room full of people who love these shows as much as I do.

As I left the con, I had big smile on my face. It’s really great to be able to connect with other people with similar interests and really feel at home with my geekiness. I think this is one of the biggest reasons I love going to cons.

Where do you feel most at home being a geek?

  1. With my kid, On FB and at work (and I work at a hospital). I recently found out that I am considered “too smart” by some of my hubby’s friends and I’ve known these people for 18yrs. Oh well.

  2. Nothing wrong with being smart. I guess at conventions, though hubby and I watch our “geek-type” films and TV shows at home and are not ashamed of reading and more.
And as an author, I write scifi, fantasy, horror, and paranormal romance–same as I read.

  3. Currently, the place I feel most at home is on twitter. I love that everyone gets my crazy references. However, PAX is definitely the best real-life place for me, especially the concerts. A whole room singing the last chorus to Jonathan Coulton’s Skullcrusher Mountain is awesome. For something in between the computer and a place I only go 1-2 times a year, I love my weekly DnD group. We are so much fun.

  4. I loved your dress – even if it did make sitting in the Browncoats booth a challenge 🙂

I hope you think about wearing your layer cake to our Geek Gala in October – I’d love to see it there!

    1. I’m really hoping to get to the Geek Gala – though I’m not sure right now. If I do go, I’ll be wearing the layer cake dress.

I will be at the Charlotte Browncoat’s CSTS screening and I’ll be wearing the layer cake dress for that as well. Plus Dragon*Con, of course!

  5. Reading GeekMom!

I don’t really have any Real Life Geekiness to hang with beyond my husband. College was the pinnacle of feeling at home with geeks– I lived in an honors dorm and it was… well, just awesome, the density of geekitude in one building like that. I miss college.

  6. First of all, it was nice to meet you in person.

After spending most of my life around non-geeks feeling like I was the one from another planet, I seem to have found my true home. While I don’t *just* love my boyfriend for his Star Trek toys, it was Star Trek that first brought us together.

Going to cons has brought a whole new level of belonging. I’ve always wanted to go to a Star Trek convention and for the last couple of years I lusted over stories from San Diego ComicCon in particular. After TrekTrax, InvaderCon and ConCarolinas, I’m hooked. I’ll never again live with a geek-centric social life.
