Why Harry Potter Ended Up With The Wrong Girl

Spoiler alert: Anyone who has not read all of the Harry Potter books and cares about the ending, stop reading now.

There is a giant hippogriff in the room, so I am just going to come out and say it: Harry and Hermione should have been a couple. Throughout the entire series I just assumed they would end up together, as they seemed to complement each other so well.

So, since it’s of Harry Potter week here at GeekMom, I thought I would share with you my top reasons Harry and Hermione should have been an item:

  1. Both are intelligent and excel at most subjects. Sure Harry blew off history of magic, but come on, it was taught by a boring ghost!
  2. They are supportive of each other. Hermione is always there for Harry, even when Ron is off pouting somewhere because he isn’t popular. In the final books, Ron even deserts both of them and Harry and Hermione must stick together to survive. Hermione is clearly willing to do all she can to help Harry defeat Voldemort.
  3. They are sensitive to each others’ feelings. Hermione knows how hurt and angry Harry is at Dumbledore in the last books, and Harry understands how Hermione feels when Ron is so cruel to her.
  4. Both of them are compassionate, sometimes to a fault. Hermione championed house elves, while Harry was always going out of his way to help people, like rescuing Fleur’s sister Gabrielle.
  5. They are both from the Muggle world, even though Harry’s parents are wizards. They both are discovering their magical skills and the Wizarding world at the same time.
  6. They are best friends and for a relationship to really last, that is a good start.
  7. Ron: where to begin? Throughout the series he is selfish, jealous, cruel, and rude. He treats Hermione poorly and uses her to get his homework done. He says unkind things about her interests and her abilities in school. He is insanely jealous of Viktor Krum and goes out of his way to be a jerk. He is not even close to Hermione intellectually. He is mostly interested in quidditch, copying homework, and being mean to people. I honestly don’t think a woman of her intellect and talents would put up with how Ron treats her, though I know some women are gluttons for punishment.

What say you, fellow HP fans? Did JK Rowling get it right? Or should Harry and Hermione have ended up with the happily ever after?

  1. Judging by most of the women I know, if faced with two guys one of whom is sweet, intelligent and generally good for her, whilst the other is a jerk – she’ll end up with the jerk! JK Rowling might not have made the best pairings, but I think she certainly made them accurate.

  3. I’m glad they didn’t– I think that showing that boys & girls (& men & women) can have close relationship without them being romantic ones is a valuable lesson. That being said, I would have liked some out-of-House pairings; Cho Chang was Ravenclaw, right? I was always on Team Cho, in the back of my head.

‘course, I would have liked to see more sympathetic Slytherin, too.

    1. I agree – it IS nice to see friends of the opposite sex who are just that, friends. Plus I think Ron balances Hermoine nicely… she and Harry together (romantically) may just fizzle in 15 years because of their similarities.

  5. Um, JKR totally got it right. Harry and Ginny were destined to be together from the very beginning! They compliment each other; they are passionate about each other.

Ron needed Hermione, and Hermione needed Ron. Ron is loyal and brave and true throughout the series. Any negative personality traits he may have exhibited were no different than any male teen may have shown in the same circumstances. To say Ron is “selfish, jealous, cruel, and rude” without explanation doesn’t do justice to this brilliant character.

Also, Ron isn’t entirely dim! He’s a wiz at chess, don’t forget. I would not say Harry is more intelligent than Ron, so the argument that Harry is better for Hermione because Ron is not her intellectual equal doesn’t hold water. And sometimes a woman is attracted to her opposite.

    1. Ditto!

And I don’t see Harry as being Hermione’s intellectual equal, either. In fact, Ron and Harry are pretty much on the same intellectual footing. It was Rob and HARRY who played hangman during Binns’ lectures while Hermione took the notes they would share later.

Points for Ron: he had his own Quidditch skills to brag about, physically he was tall and brawny (and not an underfed short little thing like Harry), he was funny, he had an insider’s knowledge of the wizarding world… Plus all the stuff already said about him.

I think the negative stuff Ron exhibits is his insecurity talking. The horcrux in the locket knows this and exploits it. But, I can easily see how those insecurities inform his missteps throughout the books.

I adore Ron. He is so wonderfully flawed, just like all of us.

Hermione and Harry is just too obvious.

  7. Ron personifies all that a “typical” wizarding teen is supposed to be like…..and muggles too. Harry is not typical in any way and so the normal teen angst stuff is over shadowed by his own personal hardships. I do not think Ron is overly mean or rude, his behavior and reactions are perfectly appropriate for a teenage boy in love and conflicted about his emotions. It is hard to be a muggle teen in the 21st century. Try being a wizard who’s best friend is destined to save the world! WOW that would earn one a frequent visitor card to the guidance counselor, don’t ya think?

  9. I always saw Ron and Hermione being a thing, personally… that being said, I agree with you.

The ending I was *hoping* for was one where Ron sacrificed himself somehow to save Hermione, and then, eventually, Harry and Hermione would have gotten together.

And that’s all I’m going to say about that, because I avoid Harry Potter fandom and the resulting shipping wars like the plague. 🙂

  11. Oh sorry, no. Ron and Hermoine FTW. Most of the comments above have covered the reasons why – particularly in regards to Ron’s behavior being perfectly natural for the circumstances. Harry exhibits the same type of behavior, particularly in Order of the Phoenix where he is “CAPS LOCK HARRY” for a vast majority of the book. And I give him the same pass as Ron, he’s an adolescent boy in the middle of some serious turmoil.

  13. Ron certainly has issues, although, he does seem to mature a lot in the last book. The point I’d like to make is that I think Harry found all of those traits you mentioned (intellectual match, compassionate, sensitive, etc.) in Ginny. Ginny’s intelligence is underplayed because she is a year behind the three main characters, but she holds her own throughout the series and serves as a force of stability and accountability for Harry.

  15. Ew. Harry with anyone was a problem. He was supposed to stay dead at the end, in my humble opinion. :/

  17. Personally – I think any of them (or at least more than one of them) ending up with their “highschool sweethearts” is rather unrealistic.

I don’t care for Harry/Ginny, but I was never particularly a Harry/Hermione person either… Personally I see Harry meeting a nice muggle once his life has calmed down – she has no idea who he is, and they live happily ever after…

I don’t care for Ron/Hermione either – I think they’d kill each other eventually, and Hermione needs someone more intellectual than either Ron or Harry…

So I guess I’m against ANY canon pairings, as far as they’re seen in the epilogue at least… I have no problems with them dating in school – I have more issues with them necessarily then getting married.

(oh and I still ship Luna/Neville… and I thought Neville/Ginny was a nice ship actually)

  19. Love the comments and you all make some valid points. I was just not impressed with Ginny. She wasn’t that developed a character other than dating everyone and doing a great bat bogey hex.

  21. I wanted Harry to wind up with Luna. Ginny never impressed me (though many of my male friends beg to differ..) but Luna is courageous, intelligent and has a sweetness that I thought would be comforting for Harry to come home to.

    1. I liked Luna as a character too, but I always pictured her with Neville. She was a little too bizarre for Harry but she was a sweetheart. She is the one who actually comments about how Ron is unkind.

  23. James was a jerk in school, ended up with Lily, and ended up NOT being a jerk. People change. Maybe the ladies saw their potential.

  25. Yeah, I’ve got to say, I’m totally Team Ron. Sure, he’s sulky sometimes. He can be a boor. But he’s just got a lot of character, that’s all. And he is a perfect compliment for Hermione, who is altogether too up tight.

Though, I do have to agree with the whole sweetheart thing. I like Ginny a great deal, but I do find their love a little implausible. I agree that Harry would have done well with a woman outside the wizarding world…

  27. C’mon! The real reason is that Harry and Hermione wanted to be a part of the Weasley family … I mean who wouldn’t! 😀

  29. I disagree that Harry would’ve done well with a woman outside the wizarding world. He became an Auror, which was pretty clearly what he was cut out for, so how would that work? “Sorry, dear, I can’t tell you about my work. At all. Not even where I work. Or why I have to go out in the middle of the night sometimes and come home smelling like smoke.”

  31. Notwithstanding anything that happened in the books, Emma Watson’s version of Hermione got kind of cross-eyed and hyperventilaty around Harry.

If Hermione and Harry couldn’t be together, the most compatible gf for Harry was obviously Luna. 🙂

  33. I always assumed that JK Rowling had Harry end up w/ Ginny to reflect his mother Lily ending up w/ his father James, they seem to be very similar in personalities from what is described in the book. Same w/ Hermione and Ron, I think she (JK), took the old adage, that we end up marrying our father/mother, to heart.

In response to Matt’s post, there are muggles that knew of the wizarding world, just look at Hermione’s parents, so he could have ended up w/ a muggle easily, although how he would have really met one, spending all his time in the wizarding world is the difficult question to answer.

  35. Frankly, the whole coda at the end drove me nuts. Seriously, how often do people end up marrying their high school sweetie? (Also made me think of Elizabeth marrying Anthony in For Better or For Worse. BLEECH!)

Harry and Ginny is bad, but I think Harry and Hermione together is bad, too. There are so many more people out there for those wizardlings to meet and fall in and out of love with.

    1. It did seem sort of tacked on and thrown together. Not much detail but just enough to say who ended up with whom and what kids they had.

  37. Nope, sorry, must disagree with you. Ron’s not unintelligent; he’s a teenage boy who matures more slowly than the girl with whom he’s smitten. I think Hermione and Harry are too much alike ever to be a successful romantic pairing. Yin and Yang, black & white, Ron & Hermione. They fill each other’s missing pieces.

Very happy with Ginny + Harry, too. 🙂

  39. Hermoine and Harry belong together. I don’t care what anyone else thinks, because they’re just too blinded by the love of cannonism to even see that JKR made a mistake in a pairing.

  41. Although I don’t think that Harry and Hermione should have ended up together, you are so goddamn right about Ron. I dislike him immensely because he’s always mean and jealous even though he should have realised that Harry does not want the fame and the attention. And Harry forgives him every bloody time!

    1. Also, I don’t like Ginny so that pairing is annoying, too. It’s just so incredibly creepy that she would worship him before she even knew him.

      1. Ron kind of annoys me too. I mean, you know its bad if another character points out how unkind you are. Then he treats Hermione horribly. A truly nice guy would not be so mean. I agree with the creepiness of Ginny. She didn’t even know him when she was younger so how did she know he was such a great guy? It just seemed like the relationship was thrown together since she was Ron’s sister.

  43. First, it was necessary for both Hermione and Harry to become part of the Weasley family. Most people grow apart from their high school friends (until they reconnect on Facebook). Since there is no Facebook in the HP world, the readers/viewers needed some other guarantee that the H,H,R trio would remain close. By making them all family, we can feel secure that their relationships will not die. For this reason, I think the STORY required Harry and Hermione to both marry into the Weasley family. If Harry and Hermione got together, Ron would have been on the outs and the trio would become a couple. Ron would be marginalized.

Now, I also think that Harry and Ginny are a good match. I think Ginny’s character is pretty well developed – she’s tough, a fighter. And you can’t forget chemistry – obviously Harry and Ginny are into each other.

Hermione and Ron are harder to imagine, but you know the saying, “opposites attract.” If I can divorce my mind from the image of the actual performers playing those parts, it is not that hard to see how Hermione’s and Ron’s constant jabs at each other are actually representative of an underlying attraction.

So, the story required it and the characters allowed it.

    1. Excellent points. From the books, I had just always pictured Hermione and Harry together and then in several shots in the movie they had moments…like at the Triwizard when Harry is about to go into the arena and she shows up and hugs him. Also, she is the one who goes with Harry to find his parents which had to have been very emotionally charged for him.

  45. Harry&Hermione are perfect imo.
Hermione wouldn’t go for someone like Ron – they’d drive eachother nuts.
Harry&Ginny are okay, but I feel like Ginny was thrown in as a bit of an afterthought, Harry just suddenly developed this crush on her out of nowhere?
Ron always insulted Hermione from the start, notice Harry didn’t. And if it hadn’t been for Harry, Hermione would’ve been killed by a troll; Harry was the one who remember her & wanted to save her; Ron just went along grudgingly.
Harry&Hermione understand eachother & always support one another.
Even JKR said she was a little sad she hadn’t put them together, because their characters are based on her & her husband.
So yeah, H&HR all the way, whatever the book says.

  47. I always wanted Harry and Hermione to get together during the Hogwarts years (or soon after) decide that they’re better off friends and then during that time Ron becomes more mature and then Ron and Hermione could get together – didn’t really care who Harry got with though thought a couple of years of therapy might have helped for any long term romantic relationship. As someone said above – I really didn’t like that they ended up with high school sweet hearts and I really am not sure that having 1 girl/boyfriend in high-school counts as a deviation. Though seeing as the epilogue is only 10 years after the fact for all we know the characters relationship could melt after the kids are off at boarding school. (Wow, do I sound pessimistic!)

  49. I guess JK didn’t feel it was romantic to have the characters play the field, but in real life, people do ALOT of growing up after high school. I am not the same person I was in 11th grade 🙂 Course, some people never do mature past high school, and I could see Ron being that way. Haha!

  51. I liked the final pairings. I am basing this on the books, not the movie (though I think it still stands), as well as a few things that JK Rowling said about the characters.

Where romance is concerned, and these books are not about romance, I think that a lot of what Rowling is trying to say is that not possible heterosexual pairing is a potential couple. Harry and Hermione do not have feelings for one another. I mean, how many of us have had friends date someone and we think to ourselves “why him/her?” or see two friends who are just friends and think “why not them?” and the truth is, it’s just not there. They just don’t feel that way. And I think for Harry and Hermione, it just wasn’t there.

Ginny, was like Harry’s mom. She’s a good person, cute, brave and very smart. Also, she’s a very talented witch. The bat boogey hex was an example of this, it wasn’t meant to be her only skill – think of the DA spells etc. Ginny was one of my favourite characters and I loved that Harry finally saw how great she was as matured into the brave and independent young woman she eventually became. And as for Hermione, could Harry possibly betray his best friend that way? The first person who showed him kindness.

A few people have mentioned the high school pairings as a problem, and normally this is something that bothers me in young adult literature. Still, I think that in the wizarding world, it makes sense. We’re talking about a population so small that they have one boarding school in Britain for all the children. Really, even if you broke up after high school, you’d keep running into one another. Also, it’s obviously common (look at the older couples), and in the case of Harry, Ron and Hermione, it would make some sense that they would wind up with someone who had been there while they were going through everything. Someone who was a link to the past and could understand the impacts of this going forward, and in Harry’s case could permanently and officially link him to the family he always wanted, the Weasleys.

To me, the pairings not only made sense, but were the only way to both logically and emotionally bring the characters’ stories to a close.

  53. I finally got to see the movie this last week. Blame that on a 7 month old 😛 Anyway, maybe what I am seeing re: Harry and Hermione is what the movies are putting out there. They seem to play up that relationship. Especially, I thought, in this last movie. The dancing in the tent?! Really?! She was with him at his parents graves.

I wish Jenny has bee more developed as a character and maybe I would feed differently.

  55. i agree 100%
They are just plain adorable together! They’ve always shown chemistry on srt and even OFF. And in the second when Hermione’s laying on the hospital bed petrified, he says ” Wish you were here, Hermione. we need you. Now more than ever.” and then whenthey hug each other!!! sigh. Ron can mary Luna or someone, ut Harry should belong to Hermione! =)

  57. I too thought Harry and Hermione should have ended up together. They were both raised in the Muggle world, having no idea they were wizards until they received their Hogwarts letters. Scenes from the books hint that at one time, their feelings for each other might be more than friendship. In “Goblet of Fire,” Hermione has her buck teeth fixed by Madam Pomfrey. Harry notices how pretty she is at the Yule Ball, espcially when she smiles. In “Half Blood Prince,” Hermione tells Harry he has never been more fanciable. He doesn’t take the hint; at least I thought it was a hint.

Harry’s brief romance with Ginny in “Half Blood Prince” was sweet, but he never says he loves her.

Surely Hermione had grown weary of being kept dangling by Ron all through their years at Hogwarts. He couldn’t seem to do more than hold her hand occasionally and put his arm around her at Dumbledore’s funeral. Even when they finally kissed in “Deathly Hallows”, Hermione instigated it.

Ginny and Neville would have made a great couple, as would Ron and Luna.

Emma Watson stated during an interview that she dreaded kissing Dan and Rupert in “Deathly Hallows”. I would have gladly filled in for her!! My daughter laughed like crazy when I told her that, and started singing “and here’s to you, Mrs. Robinson…”

  61. Though I respect JK. Rowling paired Ron and Hermione. I think that anyone could have ended up with anybody. I would have liked to see a twist like hermione and Draco. But Hermione and Ron fit the bill to me. Re- reading and re- watching the movies made me relalize that.
Though i am not a Harry and Ginny shipper. And would have liked Harry end up with someone else, I respect those who do ship them. Maybe because I never had a attachment with Ginny as I do with other characters, I didn’t learn much about her. As I’ve seen in comments above and other websites, Though ginny was brave, Ginny was also Harrys biggest fan, and I don’t think he needs another one of those. He already has plenty.

  63. Harry should have at least banged Hermione every which way to Tuesday. You know he wanted to tap that ass.
