Bikn – A Modern Day Leash

Bikn is a modern leash for your iPhone and everything you don’t want to lose. When I received the device and two smart tags last month, I knew instantly what I was attaching them to…my 6-year old son and my husband. They were a little confused when I told them to get lost so I could go find them, but they did it anyway. We had some quality family time while I tried to figure this thing out.

Montessori Letter Sounds: Another Winning App From Les Trois Elles

Last year, as I prepped for a trip to Seattle, I wrote about one of my all-time favorite apps, Numberland, by Les Trois Elles. It was not an app that I was asked to review, or given for free. I found it through a great aggregator called “Moms With Apps” and gave it a try. I loved it so much that I reviewed it, and then contacted the company to tell them how much I appreciated such a smart, interactive, and highly layered app for learning.

Battle of the iPhone Cases

In a perfect world, I wouldn’t be a klutz and I would never drop my phone. On the off chance that something happened to my device, like my six-year old son, it would survive the experience unscathed. Yea…I’ll hang on to that pipe dream. The reality is that phones get dropped. If you have children, regardless of how high you put your phone, eventually they will get their hands on it . So, what is the best way to protect your device? That’s a question I have been asking myself since I first got my iPhone last year.

It was a rather unassuming table and I nearly passed by until one of the guys took out his iPhone and put it into a bowl of water. Completely. I had a look reminiscent of a deer in headlights until he explained that it had been waterproofed with Liquipel.

Quirky Digits, Warm Fingers

Occasionally, I need to make a call during bad weather, and that means I run into a conductivity problem with my gloves. You can’t use normal gloves with a smartphone because they don’t allow the electrical signal to transfer from your finger to the phone screen. I’ve solved this problem in the past by using […]

Stop and Go!

I have a soft spot in my heart for the app Splish Splash Inn by Shortstack. It was one of the very first apps we downloaded for Vivi to play with, and not only did we love the hip, almost Googie-ish designs of the rooms, but the voiceovers repeatedly cracked us up. In fact, we’re still […]

A Digital Charlie Brown Christmas

Is it possible for an app to make you feel nostalgic? With the new A Charlie Brown Christmas app, it turns out the answer is yes, from the moment you enter and see the 45 spinning on the record player. “Mommy, what’s that thing?” “That’s a record player.” “A what?” “Why don’t you curl up […]

Steve Jobs Changed the Game for Kids

I began working in children’s media not long after Steve Jobs returned to Apple. Those were the days of CD-ROMs, when we had to fight those who controlled the purse strings to allow us to make Mac-compatible games even though it was such a small part of the computer market. There was always a sense […]
