What is it that sets a Geek Mom apart from the mundane mass of mothers? Have you ever questioned if you qualify? To really know if you are part of this proud parental pack of geeks, read on…

  1. As soon as your daughter’s hair was long enough, you put it in Leia buns.
  2. You make hot cocoa with a Bunsen burner and a beaker.
  3. You told your kids you were watching Avatar: The Last Airbender because it had such an amazing plot, but really, you just had a crush on Zuko.
  4. Your diaper bag is covered with anime character pins.
  5. You drag the family out of bed at 2AM to watch a lunar eclipse.
  6. Your children KNOW what to do in case of a zombie-pocolypse.
  7. Talk Like A Pirate Day is an honored family tradition.
  8. Your children think going grocery shopping means going to the game store.
  9. Your children’s names are Logan and Jean Grey.
  10. You have to explain to your eight-year-old daughter why she can’t dress up as a Lolita.
  11. You expect your child to know as many digits of pi as their age.
  12. As soon as a new book came out, you would send your children to bed early so you could get a head start on Harry Potter.
  13. You worry more about the font choice than content in your child’s essay.
  14. You try to make cut out cookies in the golden ratio.
  15. You crocheted Star Trek communicators for the whole family.
  16. You rearrange your kid’s extracurricular activities around your role-playing game schedule.
  17. Legoland is a perfect family vacation.
  18. Your children’s toys equipped with LEDs are in extreme danger if you can ever find that tiny screwdriver.
  19. The Toys R Us big book has two colored pens…one color for your kids’ wish list and one color for yours.
  20. You and your children sing RE: Your Brains by Jonathan Coulton on the way to school.
  21. You have a photo of your infant holding a joystick at a computer.
  22. You teach your twins to say, “Wonder Twin powers…ACTIVATE!” when they fist-bump.
  23. You sing lullabies in Elvish.
  24. You have a Zelda cosplay Christmas card.
  25. Your children think this is all normal.

What else, geek moms?

  3. Our daughter has already declared her intention to join our guild in WoW, as soon as she is old enough to play.

  5. Absolutely choked on my coffee while reading number 3 😀 because it’s so true it hurts 😀 Also now I need to learn how to crochet so I can make the communicators!

  7. My daughter (fortunately for her) would have been named Logan (wolverine), Connor (MacCloud, Highlander (the movie)). But she is a girl so she got named for her great grandmother Emily

  9. I would love to do #1 if my daughters hair were straight enough to do it. As it is, it’s curlier than a poodle’s.

And somewhere I have #21, but my son is holding a mouse, sitting on my lap, looking wonderously at the screen.

  11. We knew we were succeeded in being geek parents when our two year old ran down the aisle at Fry’s yelling gleefully “Software! Look at all the software!” abd then marched past the toys and begged us to buy her an led flashlight. We also have a photo of her with her toy lap top sitting next to her dad while he worked on his.

  13. My baby’s too young for most of this (10 months), but she does have her own PS2 controller (she wants our red Xbox controller, though), she has an old laptop and iPhone she loves playing with.

We named her Kara after Starbuck (Aka Kara Thrace) from the new BSG. I had to talk my husband out of Samus as her middle name.

She had three Halloween costumes this year: Wonder Woman, Triceratops, Sleeping Beauty (although the last was just an excuse for me to dress up as Maleficent).

She loves watching Dr. Who and Mythbusters. They are our go-to when she’s really fussy; she calms right down whenever they are on.

Oh, and she has a Wonder Woman onesie, a Star Trek red shirt onesie and a “Zombie Bait” bib.

  15. I totally taught my spawn to sing “RE: Your Brains.” However, I think one digit of Pi per year is a bit of a low bar, don’t you?

  17. Our 8 year old announced to the car after seeing HP7 in Imax….”I was born to be weird!” LOVE IT!

    1. My eight year old daughter says, “I love to be weird! I was born to be weird, too!” Also, when we started playing D&D 4th edition, she wanted to play, too, and she did reasonably well. Otherwise, I’m not sure I qualify.

  19. My boy/girl twins have been to our local sci-fi convention every year of their lives (all 6 so far), starting when they were 21 days old. I have a picture of 2 adult stormtroopers saluting my little Darth Vader from this year. One year the theme was superheroes, so of course their badge names were Zan & Jayna. I’m gonna have to teach them to do the wondertwins fist bump – love that!

Every night, they insist that I have to sing “Soft Kitty” to them so they can sleep.

One of my proudest moments was when my son told me he wanted to be Captain Mal from Firefly for Halloween.

I got Adam Savage to sign photos of himself at w00tstock, and add a personal Happy Birthday to each of my kids. When they opened their gifts a week later, they were thrilled!

  21. I forgot, my husband gave me two sets of dice earrings for my birthday or Mother’s day. I love them, but I can never seem to find them.

  23. My daughter loved superheroes so one birthday party had a superhero theme (a Batman cake and the kids made superhero masks). At Halloween once she decided she was a superhero, “Seasons”, and I made her a costume complete with cape, armbands, and belt.

Another year she was a Jawa and another, Captain Janeway. That costume came in handy when we went to Vegas for the Star Trek museum. We had a spirited discussion with some Ferengi over getting their picture taken with the famous Captain Janeway!

  25. When I was going over the list with my kids to get their opinion, they mostly said, “But that’s just normal stuff.” Which is how I came up with the very last one.

We are one hilarious group of moms out here.

  27. My children were LARP characters *in utero* – *both* of them. They both knew how to stay in character before age five. The lifetime memberships to the local SF club that we bought them as soon as they hit paying age for the local con was a foregone conclusion. But there are other geekdoms out there, people (even if the only lullaby my husband could find to calm either of them was “Darth Vader’s March”): my children know how to make correct Court obeisances for their genders, and how to correctly address royalty – both before single digits.

  29. I watched Mythbusters while I was in labor with my youngest. I’m still torn on if it was a good thing he waited until after the show to make his appearance or if it would have been better to keep watching while I had him.

For her 6th birthday DH taught our oldest how to play Magic the Gathering. She can win. She also kicks some serious butt on chess and backgammon.

There are some things that are right on par, a few others I need to catch up on!

    1. And I was highly disappointed when told that the maternity’s Internet was down. How the hell would I be able to play at Echo Bazaar (http://echobazaar.failbettergames.com) ?
It actually is the perfect game for a newborn’s mother : you only need a minute a few times a day. Exactly what you’ll get.
